About
“The Drowsy Chaperone” is a gentle send-up of 1920s stage musicals. It begins with the Man in Chair sharing with us a cast recording on vinyl of the fictional “Drowsy Chaperone”. He’s too young to have seen the musical during its original run but still knows each line by heart & he knows all the actors playing the parts, including a cut-rate Valentino cast as Adolfo & a rising Hollywood starlet playing Janet. It’s the Man in Chair who narrates the action while the record spins & the show is conjured before our eyes in the home of dowager Mrs Tottendale.
In the play-within-a-play that unfolds Janet is about to marry nice guy Robert & leave show business, much to the dismay of Broadway producer Feldzieg. In a plot no goofier than those found in old musicals, Robert & Janet must steer clear of each other until their wedding ceremony. Seeing to this is Robert’s Best Man, George & a woman referred to only as the Drowsy Chaperone, who is more interested in mixing drinks than keeping lovers apart.
